When to Upgrade the Electrical Panel

The main electrical panel contains the circuits that deliver electricity to the outlets, appliances, lighting, and other equipment and devices in your home. An outdated or damaged electrical panel can overload the electrical system, damage appliances, and create a safety hazard. Older electrical panels usually show signs when it’s time for replacement.

Electrical panels should be upgraded when they are:

  • Frequently tripping circuit breakers: An occasional circuit breaker tripping is usually not a problem. However, if you have many breakers that are constantly tripping, it is a sign that the panel can’t handle the power demand from the circuits.
  • Electrical issues: If you have noticed scorch marks on outlets, smell a burning odor, or hear sizzling or buzzing noises near the panel, have an electrician inspect the panel.
  • Known to be unsafe: Federal Pacific Electric and Zinsco electrical panels were manufactured between the 1960s and 1990s. These panels have been shown to be unsafe and cause electrical fires.
  • Fuse boxes: If you have an old fuse box that uses fuses in place of circuit breakers, the panel is outdated and obsolete. Fuse boxes should be replaced with a quality electrical panel for safety reasons.

Every problem with an electrical panel does not automatically require replacement. In a newer panel with just one faulty circuit breaker, that breaker can usually be replaced. A licensed electrician can inspect your electrical panel to determine if an upgrade is recommended in your situation.

High-Quality Electrical Panels

Today’s homes usually have 150- or 200-amp panels, but older homes often have a 100-amp panel box. When these panels were made, homes didn’t have as many appliances, and many modern electronic devices didn’t even exist. Our power needs have greatly increased in the past few decades, and our electrical panel upgrades in Wilmington, MA can ensure that your home has sufficient power.

The installation of a new electrical panel requires connecting the panel to the main electrical service wires that enter your home. Working with high-voltage electricity is extremely dangerous without sufficient training and experience. A licensed electrician should handle electrical panel installations and replacements to make sure the work is done right and according to current code requirements.
